Redesign of polar bear enclosure, Wuppertal Zoo
In 1911, the “Nordlandpanorama” was presented to the public at today’s Wuppertal Zoo (Elberfeld Zoo). Impressive, artificial rocky landscapes and a unique panorama enabled visitors to view polar bears, sea lions and mountain goats at the same time. The founder of “Hagenbeck’s Zoo” in Hamburg, Carl Hagenbeck (1844-1913), had advised the zoo on the construction of this polar bear enclosure in Elberfeld.
The zoological garden in Wuppertal is planning to redesign and repurpose the existing polar bear enclosure and the seal enclosure in front of it.
The aim is to put the old facilities (polar bears and seals) to new use with an innovative concept, possibly also by changing the animal population. The new concept should be based on “best practice” animal husbandry and present visitors with an attractive and educational facility that fits in well with its surroundings.
