In the process of gradually modernizing the historic Moscow Zoo, we were asked to develop a new exhibit concept for the flagship species, the polar bear (Ursus maritimus). Taking the long institutional tradition, the large attendance and the central-city location into account, two different concepts were presented, following two different budget requirements. The concept did not only follow the latest biological know-how of polar bear husbandry and breeding, but also proposed a world-class visitor experience, through a uniquely themed environment, giving the spectator different options to observe the animals from all kinds of different perspectives. A special focus during this project was placed on the educational concept of the new facility, and possible additional revenues in connection with event activities.
