Our state-of-the art elephant facility design does not only fulfil the needs of keepers and visitors, but particularly that of a complex and very social animal. The nature-like habitat has to be safe for the keepers, attractive for the visitors, and must offer the animal all it needs for a healthy and active life, for breeding and rearing the next generation. Designing exhibits for this flagship species requires solid knowledge of elephant management and biology. Tierpark Hagenbeck was the first zoological institution to show planned herd birth of elephants in captivity. This free-ranging elephant hall was specially designed for this purpose. So far, four calves were successfully delivered within their social group of relatives in this hall.
