In connection with the renovation of the historic elephant enclosure (originally built in 1923) at Tierpark Hagenbeck, the main elephant outdoor bathing pool was redesigned. We created a naturally-appearing swimming pool for the elephants (Elephas maximus), which enables these large animals not only to swim, but also to dive. The shallow water area around the pool built into the exhibit ensures that elephant calves have a safe entrance and exit into the pool at any given time. Around the pool’s natural green coastline, the visitor has a spectacular and unique view of the bathing animals, without any visible border between him and the grey giants.
