The goal of this project was to modernize a predominant (situated directly at the old main entrance) and renowned historic bear enclosure. The challenge was to develop a new and modern breeding facility for large bears on the site of a listed building and enclosure. In addition to the modernization of the indoor facility (backstage cages and breeding boxes), a second exhibit was established in front of the historic exhibit. A large water moat allows the visitor an open view on a natural appearing landscape and its inhabitants. Two outside enclosures separated by drawbridge invisible to the visitor, enable the caretakers to separate the male offspring from the bear cubs, although the animals seem to be on one and the same exhibit to the visitor. The Kamchatka Brown Bears (Ursus arctos piscator) have already bred several times and reared their offspring naturally.
